AI's August 31 news cycle was less about one new model than about the systems forming around the models: advertising inside chat, platform oversight in Europe, financial regulators treating frontier AI as a cyber risk, and chip partners trying to make custom AI infrastructure easier to build.

That is the thread running through today's Daily AI Brief. The same technology that product teams sell as assistance is now becoming media inventory, regulated search infrastructure, bank operational risk and a hardware stack decision.

The common pressure point is accountability. Once AI systems sit closer to purchases, search behavior, critical finance systems and health-related conversations, companies have to prove more than model capability. They have to prove control, separation, auditability and recovery.

## OpenAI turns ChatGPT into an ad platform

OpenAI said on [August 31](https://openai.com/index/expanding-access-to-ai-with-chatgpt-ads/?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io) that ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch. The company said tens of thousands of advertisers use the platform, and that direct purchasing through Ads Manager is expanding across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

The business shift is clear. ChatGPT is no longer only a paid subscription and API product; OpenAI is also selling access to decision moments inside conversations. The company says ads are labeled, separate from answers, and do not give advertisers access to private conversations. Those are company commitments, not independent audit results. The question for users and regulators is how clearly people can tell where assistance ends and commercial suggestion begins.

## Europe adds ChatGPT to DSA supervision

The European Commission's [DSA supervision list](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/list-designated-vlops-and-vloses?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io), updated on August 31, designates ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine with 159.1 million average monthly active users in the EU. Reddit and Roblox were also newly listed as Very Large Online Platforms, with 57.2 million and 46.6 million average monthly active users respectively.

For ChatGPT, the label matters because it puts an AI-mediated answer and discovery service into a platform-risk framework built around transparency, systemic risk, illegal content and minors. The Commission has not yet published the designation decision for the new entries, so the detailed compliance timetable still needs to be read from the underlying decisions when they appear.

## Financial regulators focus on frontier-AI cyber risk

The Financial Stability Board published an August 31 G20 letter from chair Andrew Bailey warning that frontier AI may materially alter the speed, scale and economics of cyber risk. Eazzy Tech News covered the financial-resilience angle in more detail in [Frontier AI just became a bank resilience problem](https://eazzytechnews.ghost.io/frontier-ai-bank-resilience-problem/).

The short version: this is no longer only a model-release debate for labs. The FSB's public summary links frontier models to response and recovery capability, safe deployment, and concentration risk around important technology providers. That makes AI governance a board-level resilience issue for banks, insurers, supervisors and the vendors that sit underneath them.

## NVIDIA and MediaTek push custom AI infrastructure

NVIDIA and MediaTek [announced an expanded partnership](https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-and-mediatek-deepen-long-standing-partnership-to-build-ai-edge-to-cloud-computing-platforms?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io) on August 31 covering cloud AI factories, local AI computing and automotive platforms. MediaTek plans to adopt NVIDIA NVLink Fusion so customers can connect custom XPUs into NVLink-connected rack-scale AI factories. NVIDIA also said it invested $3.5 billion in convertible bonds issued by MediaTek.

This is a hardware story, but not just a GPU story. NVIDIA describes NVLink Fusion as a prevalidated path around chiplets, memory, advanced packaging and rack-scale integration. MediaTek brings custom silicon and system-on-chip design. The bet is that frontier-model builders and cloud providers want differentiated accelerators without engineering every surrounding system from scratch. The caveat is in the companies' own statement: implementation, commercial results and product timing remain uncertain.

## Transluce tests mental-health behavior across models

Transluce [published](https://transluce.org/announcing-mental-health-evaluation?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io) a mental-health model evaluation on August 31 covering more than 50,000 simulated crisis conversations, more than 1 million messages and 77 model variants. The nonprofit says newer models improved in obvious crisis handling but still struggle with less clear-cut behavior, such as creative-writing or roleplay requests that could facilitate self-harm.

The work is useful because it moves beyond single-turn benchmark prompts. Transluce says it used simulated users, automated judges, clinical-expert rubrics, and privileged access from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind to compare API behavior with consumer chatbot behavior. That access is also a reason to read the disclosure carefully. Safety evaluations are becoming more realistic, but the independence and operating conditions of those evaluations now matter as much as the headline numbers.
