Mistral has raised €3 billion in a Series D led by Samsung Electronics, valuing the French AI company at more than €21 billion. The company says the money will expand research, computing capacity and its international commercial operation.

The round is Europe's largest equity raise by a technology company, according to [Mistral's announcement](https://mistral.ai/news/mistral-makes-sovereign-open-weight-ai-to-frontier/?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io). Samsung, the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity led it. Advent, BlackRock-managed funds and Luxembourg joined as new investors. ## Funding tied to deployment

Mistral is framing the raise around more than model development. It says customers want performance while retaining control of data, models, compute and systems running in production. That is a company position, not an independently measured comparison with other AI providers.

The company says it operates in 20 countries and supports more than 125 enterprises in mission-critical AI transformation, naming Airbus, ASML and HSBC. The announcement does not disclose the scale, contract value or outcomes of those deployments. It does say the capital will help expand infrastructure and commercial reach alongside research.

That focus gives Samsung's role a practical dimension. Mistral's statement says Samsung led the round, while Samsung's investment creates a strategic link between a major industrial company and a provider of open-weight models, AI infrastructure and deployment services. The funding announcement does not set out a product roadmap or a timetable for Samsung deployments, so neither can be treated as a confirmed result.

The funding also changes the scale of the execution challenge. Training capacity, regional infrastructure and deployment support are expensive to build, and Mistral has not published a breakdown of how the €3 billion will be allocated across them.

## What the round can and cannot prove

The €3 billion is confirmed financing, and Mistral has described where it intends to invest. Its stated customer count, international reach and promise of greater independence in deployment are company claims. They show the business case Mistral is pitching to investors, but they do not establish that the new capital will improve performance, lower costs or change adoption for every customer.

For European businesses that need local control over sensitive workflows, the round gives Mistral more resources to build the capacity behind that pitch. The test comes later: whether its customers can turn the additional compute, delivery teams and open-weight models into deployments with results they disclose.
