OpenAI launched Astra for Law as a legal version of GPT-6 Astra, giving selected law firms and legal-technology companies a model configuration that can search U.S. legal authorities before drafting or analyzing legal work.

The [September 17 announcement](https://openai.com/index/astra-for-law/?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io) says Astra for Law combines GPT-6 Astra with a legal search index, instructions for legal analysis and writing, privacy controls and workflow integrations. OpenAI describes it as a new AI foundation for law, but the practical change is narrower and easier to test: a frontier model now has a legal-research layer and legal-work settings attached to it.

The search index covers U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions across more than 230 million URLs, according to OpenAI. The company says its work with Free Law Project brings CourtListener's case-law collection into the research experience. [Free Law Project says](https://wiki.free.law/c/courtlistener/help/data-coverage/case-law?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io) CourtListener encompasses more than 99.9 percent of published U.S. precedential case law and keeps adding new court material.

## What OpenAI added

Astra for Law is not a public legal database by itself. It is a model configuration that can use a legal search index while drafting answers, memos or analysis. That matters because legal work often turns on whether the cited authority is binding, current and close to the facts. A general web search can find legal pages, but it does not automatically separate a controlling court opinion from a blog summary, a reversed case or an unrelated statute.

The launch package has four moving parts:

- GPT-6 Astra provides the underlying reasoning and drafting model.
- The legal search index gives the model a route to U.S. legal authorities and passages.
- Legal instructions shape how the system distinguishes holdings, facts, weaknesses and uncertainty.
- Plugins and custom interfaces connect the model to firm tools, matter context and document workflows.

OpenAI says Astra for Law passed the overall correctness check on 54.0 percent of 200 U.S. legal research questions from the private validation set of Vals AI's Legal Research Bench, compared with 38.7 percent for GPT-6 Astra using web search alone. The company also says the legal setup found more reference cases and more relevant passages on case-law questions. Those are OpenAI-reported results on a private validation set, so they should be read as launch evidence rather than a full public comparison with Westlaw, Lexis, CoCounsel or specialist firm systems.

## Where law firms fit

OpenAI is initially offering Astra for Law to selected law firms through Trusted Access in ChatGPT and Codex, with API access planned later. It will appear in the model picker as GPT-6 Astra Law and in the API as gpt-6-astra-law, according to the announcement.

The firm workflow examples show how OpenAI wants the product used. Sullivan & Cromwell built an agreement analyzer around negotiating playbooks and precedents. Ropes & Gray built a diligence system for reviewing data-room materials. Cooley built GO Public for IPO preparation. In each example, the model is not only answering generic legal questions; it is being connected to a firm's own standards, documents and review process.

That is why governance sits close to the product. OpenAI says eligible firms receive Zero Data Retention on the API, and that ChatGPT Enterprise usage is excluded from human review by default. The company is also working with Latham & Watkins on information permissions, ethical walls, client instructions and firm oversight.

## The integration strategy

The partner layer is as important as the model layer. OpenAI says 26 partner-built plugins connect ChatGPT to legal tools from providers including iManage, Intapp, DeepJudge, Thomson Reuters, Harvey and Legora. Thomson Reuters is bringing HighQ matter context into ChatGPT and previewing a CoCounsel Legal connector, while Harvey and Legora are named as API customers that can build on Astra for Law.

[Legal IT Insider reported](https://legaltechnology.com/breaking-news-openai-unveils-astra-for-law/?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io) that there is no benchmark available comparing Astra for Law with leading legal research providers, and noted OpenAI's own language that the new function complements licensed legal content and specialist products. [Artificial Lawyer](https://www.artificiallawyer.com/2026/09/18/openai-launches-astra-for-law/?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io) likewise framed the launch around OpenAI moving into a crowded legal AI market with law-firm and legal-tech partners already attached. [The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/openai-astra-for-law-gpt-6-legal-search-index?ref=eazzytechnews.ghost.io) also focused its coverage on the legal search index and benchmark caveats.

The next proof will come from use inside real matters, not from the launch page. Law firms will need to test citation accuracy, privilege controls, source freshness, conflict rules, matter permissions and whether lawyers can challenge the model's reasoning quickly enough. Astra for Law gives OpenAI a legal-search foothold. The harder question is whether firms can turn that foothold into reviewed work without weakening the professional judgment and source checking that legal clients still require.
