ChatGPT Ads gets Sponsored Agents and business integrations
OpenAI's September 16 ChatGPT Ads update adds Sponsored Agents, AI campaign tooling and HubSpot and Shopify integrations.
OpenAI is turning ChatGPT Ads from a placement product into a fuller advertising workflow, adding Sponsored Agents, AI campaign tools and direct HubSpot and Shopify integrations for businesses that want to advertise inside ChatGPT.
The September 16 announcement is a material update to the ChatGPT Ads pilot. The earlier ads story was about labels, answer separation and access to ad inventory. This release moves deeper into how advertisers create campaigns, respond to leads, connect product catalogs and measure results.
What changed
The biggest new format is Sponsored Agents. OpenAI says selected U.S. advertisers can test ads that let a user open a separate, clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad. In that conversation, the user can ask questions, compare options and then move to the advertiser's site when ready.
That changes the shape of the ad unit. A search ad usually points to a landing page. A social ad usually points to a product page, form or app install. A Sponsored Agent puts a branded conversation between the ad click and the final destination.
The launch has four practical parts:
- Sponsored Agents, now in a limited U.S. test with selected advertisers.
- An Ads Manager plugin for ChatGPT Work, so marketers can create, edit and analyze campaigns through natural language.
- AI creative tools that can suggest copy, images and campaign variants from a landing page and objective.
- HubSpot and Shopify integrations that connect ChatGPT Ads to customer-relationship and ecommerce workflows.
Search Engine Land, a specialist marketing-technology publication, framed the same update as a shift toward conversational ad units. That corroboration matters because the rollout is not only a new slot for ads; it changes what happens after someone clicks.
Why HubSpot and Shopify matter
HubSpot is the CRM side of the rollout. In its own announcement, HubSpot says it is launching the first CRM integration with ChatGPT Ads, allowing customers to build, manage and measure campaigns directly in HubSpot. A separate HubSpot help page says connected accounts can create campaigns, track performance alongside other ad channels, and attribute contacts and deals to ChatGPT ad spend.
That makes the release more than an ad-format test. For a sales or marketing team, the valuable part is whether a ChatGPT ad can connect to the customer record, the follow-up workflow and the performance report without forcing the team to rebuild its operating system around a new channel.
Shopify covers the ecommerce side. OpenAI says U.S.-based Shopify merchants can use a new ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store to create and manage campaigns, with products integrated through Shopify Catalog. OpenAI also says the app is scheduled to become available internationally in supported ChatGPT Ads markets on September 23.
The risk is in the middle
The product logic is clear: people increasingly ask AI systems to compare products, plan purchases and choose services, so advertisers want a way to appear inside those decision moments. The difficult part is keeping the boundary visible. OpenAI says Sponsored Agents are separate and labeled, and that ChatGPT Ads remain distinct from ChatGPT's answers. Users will still need to understand when they are talking to OpenAI's assistant and when they are talking to a business-sponsored agent.
Measurement is another open question. HubSpot can help companies connect ad spend to contacts and deals, and Shopify can connect campaigns to product catalogs and commerce reporting. Those integrations do not by themselves prove return on ad spend. They make the channel easier to operate and easier to test.
For OpenAI, the September 16 release shows the advertising business becoming a platform: ad format, campaign creation, creative generation, CRM attribution and ecommerce catalog setup are moving into one stack. For businesses, the next test is practical. They need to know whether Sponsored Agents produce useful customer conversations, whether labeling stays obvious, and whether the integrations create measurable sales rather than another dashboard to manage.
