Google Cloud has moved Gemini 3.8 Live with Live Avatar into general availability for Gemini Enterprise, which means teams building customer-facing agents can now pair real-time speech with a video avatar, live visual understanding and background tool calls in a production product surface.

The September 25 Google Cloud announcement turns last week's Gemini 3.8 Live launch into a more concrete enterprise offer. Google says the Live Avatar feature can generate synchronized video avatars, keep a spoken conversation moving while tools run, understand live camera feeds or screen shares and support 97 spoken languages with automatic language detection.

The update shifts the product from raw voice response toward a full interaction loop. A voice agent can listen, talk, look at what the user is showing, call an application programming interface (API), which lets software systems exchange data, and keep the conversation alive while the backend work finishes.

What changes for builders?

The biggest change is availability. Google says Gemini 3.8 Live with Live Avatar is available in Gemini Enterprise with United States and European Union endpoints, provisioned throughput, enterprise compliance controls and data-governance features. Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking remains in private preview, so the article's general-availability claim should not be read as full availability for every related Gemini voice model.

The feature set matters because many voice agents still break the conversation when a task takes time. Google says Gemini 3.8 Live can execute tools and API calls in the background while acknowledging the request and continuing to talk. In a support or sales flow, that could mean the agent checks a policy, searches inventory or creates a case packet without forcing the user to wait in silence.

Background tool calls Agent tasks can run while the conversation continues. Reliability still depends on the connected workflow, data and guardrails.

Why the avatar part is sensitive

Google's announcement spends space on safeguards because video avatars raise a different trust problem from voice alone. The company says customers can deploy from a curated library of pre-built avatars, while custom avatar creation requires enterprise allowlisting and verification. Google also says generated audio and video streams carry SynthID watermarks, a Google watermarking system designed to help identify generated media.

Those controls do not settle every policy question around synthetic representatives, but they set the boundaries of the product Google is offering: curated avatars by default, restricted custom avatar creation and watermarking for generated streams.

Where Google says it is being used

The announcement names several customer and partner examples. Cox Automotive's Autotrader is described as using live screen emphasis and tool calling to guide car shoppers through search, comparison and financing. Equal AI says Gemini 3.8 Live improved interruption handling, multilingual conversations and tool-call reliability for a personal artificial intelligence (AI) assistant handling calls in Indian languages. Salesforce frames the work as a connection between Gemini 3.8 Live and Agentforce, its customer-service agent platform.

Those are attributed customer statements, not independent measurements of latency, conversion or support quality. For readers, the practical news is narrower and clearer: Google now has a production enterprise route for voice agents that combine a speaking avatar, multimodal context and connected tools, while reserving the most sensitive avatar creation path for allowlisted customers.
